As new nonferrous mines are considered for Minnesota, our state has the opportunity to learn from enormous clean-up costs borne by other states. SF 2349 protects water and taxpayers’ wallets by tightening existing financial assurance rules for non-ferrous mining. The changes will ensure that money is available for necessary water treatment, that the financial instrument is sound (approved by Management and Budget) and that the public is kept informed of adjustments in financial assurance.
Position: Support bill; follow author’s lead on amendments.

Though the 2010 Minnesota legislative session produced mixed results for Minnesota’s clean energy and Great Outdoors future, our work does not stop here.
